The Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program accelerated my development as a professional through demanding rotations that challenged me to perform at my highest level. Evolving in an environment where the bar is being consistently raised forced me to evaluate my strengths and weaknesses daily. From this, I was able to create a plan to ensure my progress to meet and exceed this higher standard expected of me. I believe that this experience will translate into a smoother transition from pharmacy student to pharmacy resident; I have confidence in my clinical knowledge foundation, communication skills, time management skills, and self-evaluation and independent learning skills. Though there is still much to learn, my comfort in being properly prepared for residency is with no doubt due to the Scholars Program, all of the excellent preceptors I had the pleasure to interact with, as well as Dr. Coons, Dr. Ensor, Dr. Smith, and Ms. Parnell.

Andrew Beyer

I began the Pharmacotherapy Scholars program as a third year pharmacy student with the goal of pursuing a residency in order to become clinical pharmacist. This past year has provided me with an invaluable learning experience that has not only transformed me into a strong residency contender but has helped direct my career path through exposure to various specialty areas of practice. The preceptor involvement, quality clinical rotations, and professional development truly distinguish the fourth professional year as a track for post-graduation training. Daily participation on a clinical care team within a large academic medical center has resulted in multi-disciplinary teaching experiences, and established a foundation for clinical decision-making. I have continuously expanded my capabilities in each phase of the program, and feel confident in my aptitude from the advanced rotations. Progression through the Pharmacotherapy Scholars program has been my greatest accomplishment as a student pharmacist, and I am fortunate to graduate with this designation.

Aaron Devanathan

Placement: University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill

Much like a mirror, I reflect. I reflect on my time during the Scholars Program. I reflect on the time leading up to the Scholars Program and think about why I wanted to pursue this structured experience. I knew Pittsburgh was a great place to train; I knew the preceptors and they are all good people. But even beyond that, I knew that the structure of the program would afford me opportunities that I may or may not have received otherwise.

The goal of this program is to prepare me for residency training, and one of the ways the program accomplishes this is through a holistic approach. Challenging rotations, longitudinal research projects, and weekly professional development meetings are not only components of this program, but they also comprise the residency year. I was constantly challenged in this program, and that is what made the experiences fun and rewarding.

This Scholars Program is not easy, and it is not meant to be. As I look back to my first day of rotations, I can effortlessly see how I grew both professionally and personally. I have more confidence in my abilities to be a patient advocate. I have much more clinical knowledge and valuable resources. I also have directly translatable skills and processes that I will bring into my residency. Drs. Coons, Ensor, and Smith are personally invested in the program, and my successes will be attributable to their hard work and dedication. To have individuals this highly dedicated is neither a quality to be taken lightly nor a characteristic that is altogether common. And I thank them for their work. They have ensured that our experiences are top-notch, and I am proud of my growth over the year. I welcome future students to join the Scholars Program and to accept the challenge. The sea of knowledge awaits you.

Kyle Hejmanowski

Placement: Bayfront Health, St. Petersburg

The Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program intrigued me from the onset because I know it will challenge me to develop into the best student pharmacist I can be before entering into actual practice as a certified pharmacist. Since entering pharmacy school I have always had a strong desire to pursue a residency upon graduation with aspirations of becoming a clinical pharmacist. One of the most compelling aspects the scholars program for me is the opportunity to use the established clinically oriented faculty members as a vehicle to interact with and learn alongside to better understand the subtle nuances that exist within their respective field of pharmacy. I have strong belief that this program will equip me with the necessary skills and tools needed to develop a well-rounded practice of pharmacy, with a clinically focused approach, that will enable me to become a viable and competitive candidate for top tier residency programs across the country.

Cameron Ninos

Placement: University of Wisconsin, Madison

It was a difficult decision to make regarding whether or not to enroll in the Scholars program. The financial cost of sacrificing an off-block, in addition to the structured nature of the programs meant that I was subscribing to someone else’s plan, and I was not necessarily sure how well I would fit. Now, I can unequivocally say that joining the Scholars program was one of the best decisions that I made during my pharmacy career (along with joining PDC), and that I would not be in the position I am today without it.

The core of the program revolves around intense rotations with challenging preceptors. It is a spectacular relief to be able to attend day one of each new rotation block, knowing that your preceptor is committed to your learning and will push you to become a strong resident. Yes, at times, the rotations can be grueling, but the personal fulfillment resulting from the growth of your patient care skills means that the exhaustion is always accompanied by a satisfaction with the work that you have completed, and a drive to continue to improve.

The growth of my knowledge and skills throughout the year are tangible areas in which the program has allowed me to maximize my potential as a student. However, the most important effect that the program has had on me is to instill the idea that we are capable of competing at any institution in any field we choose to pursue. My career path and goals were challenged repeatedly, forcing me to evaluate what I value most, and which institutions could provide that to me. In this way, the Scholars program was able to open doors for me that I had never previously recognized as being present.

I am grateful to the Scholars Program for many things. The expansion of my clinical skills based upon challenging rotations, the development of critical evaluation skills through the research program, and the fostering of personal growth through the professional development seminars are all areas in which I would not have been able to attain my current experience level without the program. With this in mind I wish the best of luck to future Scholars, in continuing to take advantage of the wonderful preceptors, administrators, and coordinators who give the program its meaning, and continuing the tradition of excellence the program has established.

Neil Turco

Placement: UPMC St. Margaret

I remember debating with myself on whether to apply for the Scholars program, as I knew it would be a challenge. During the interview process for pharmacy residencies, I found that program after program was interested in my training as part of the Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program. As I was interviewed, I was able to draw upon many lessons learned during my experience in Scholars. Through the tough rotations, I had taken care of unique patients and had many personal stories to share. Those programs who required clinical cases or journal club presentations were impressed with my ability, developed through the crucible of Chris Ensor. I was able to confidently state that I will be ready for the residency experience, given my training in the Scholars program. As I remember Dr. Ensor stating during the application process, “It won’t be easy, but it will be worth it.” I could not agree more with those words.

Meera Vachhani

Placement: The Johns Hopkins Hospital

The Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program revolutionizes the way student pharmacists approach P4 year with truly unique opportunities. I initially sought this program for its intensive curriculum of acute care rotations and the opportunity to perform meaningful research. I did not anticipate how this program would challenge me daily to apply critical thinking to patient care and further motivate me to hone my skills as a clinical pharmacist. Furthermore, the regular journal clubs and research meetings served as an ideal medium for discussion that advanced my understanding of the academic elements of pharmacy. Moreover, the true strength of the program is its preceptors. Each preceptor invests in the success of each student by providing constant feedback and encouragement. This partnership between student and preceptor fosters an atmosphere of both personal and professional growth.

With these experiences, I have gained the knowledge, skills, and confidence to succeed in a challenging residency program and career in clinical pharmacy. I am grateful to the entire Scholars team for the opportunity to participate in this program and I look forward to representing them in all my future endeavors.

Ryan Winstead

Placement: University of Kentucky, Lexington

The Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program served as a platform for me to grow as a pharmacist. It’s easy to see why one would apply to this program. As the website says, and I can indeed confirm, this program rigorously stretched my clinical, data, and professional skills. What one may not gleam from the website is the mentorship and group learning that goes on throughout the year.  During every research meeting, we learned not only how to manage data, but how to do it together. During every journal club, we not only learned about new statistical approaches, but also how to ask appropriate questions of our colleagues and how to better have a discussion about a paper which we may not have fully comprehended upon first glance.  Working with other motivated, confident individuals truly elevated my level of learning from what I was likely able to do alone.  At the end of the day and end of the program, I know that I have made lasting connections with people who I can count on in the future and with whom I’ve grown a lot with over the past year. For this and much more, I am grateful for this experience.

Ranran “Christina” Xia

Placement: Methodist Health, Houston

The Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program was without a doubt one of the best and most rewarding experiences I have had during pharmacy school. The exposure I got through the core rotations in the various acute care and ambulatory care settings allowed me to see and learn how to care for patients in a variety of practice settings. In addition, the challenging structure of the Scholars rotations and the amazing mentorship from all of the preceptors were instrumental to my development and growth both professionally and as an individual. I have also thoroughly enjoyed working closely all year with all of the program directors and my fellow Scholars. I can honestly say that the various aspects of this program have enhanced not just my clinical knowledge, but also my patient care, research, time management, and communication skills. I am very grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of this program!

Class of 2015

Anthony Boyd

Placement: University of Michigan Health System PGY1- Ann Arbor, MI

When I began the Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program last fall, I knew that it would provide an abundance of opportunities for development and help me to achieve my future goals. Included were the additional research projects, top-tier rotations, professional development, and much more. The Scholars Program was an attractive option for my last year of pharmacy school as it would help to prepare me for the rigorous demands of a PGY1 residency. By the end of the program, I felt more prepared to handle residency training and I believe it truly set me apart in the ever challenging application process.

This preparation was evident when I left the confines of UPMC Presbyterian and left the state to pursue a clinical rotation at an outside hospital. The skills instilled in me throughout the program were apparent even on my first day within a unique practice setting. I was able to quickly adapt to this new learning environment and succeed due to the knowledge base and training that the Scholars Program provided. I would highly recommend the program to any future student considering residency training as it allows students to practice at their highest level and prepare for their future endeavors.

At the end of the day, I reflect on my time in the Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program and what stands out is the relationships I have built. Typical rotations are usually five weeks long, which is roughly 25 days to get to know your preceptor on a personal level. When I look back at the Scholars Program, I have spent over an entire calendar year with each and every person in the program. Not only have I seen myself grow over the last year, I was able to do so along with nine other colleagues who have now become my friends. We may have come from all different areas from within the School of Pharmacy, but we truly have grown as one. In addition, our mentors Dr. Ensor, Dr. Coons, and Dr. Smith have taken it upon themselves to ensure that we become some of the best students that walk out the doors of Salk Hall upon graduation. Outside of our professional development, we have built relationships with our mentors that will remain for years to come. Ultimately, I can list all of the accomplishments of the Scholars program on a curriculum vitae. However, the bonds built will continue to prosper throughout our careers.

Alexandra Chambers

Placement: Banner Baywood Medical Center, University of Arizonia, Phoenix PGY1- Phoenix, AZ

The University of Pittsburgh Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program has provided me with a solid foundation of the skills I will need to excel as a PGY-1 pharmacy practice resident. Through participation in an advanced research project and the completion of challenging clinically based rotations, I have had the opportunity to collaborate with so many knowledgeable preceptors and colleagues. Moving forward, I believe that what I have learned through the academically demanding Scholars program will help me throughout my pharmacy career. I am so grateful to the program leaders for all of their efforts and hard work in making this an amazing learning experience for me.

Tyler Chanas

Placement: University of Virginia Health System PGY1- Charlottesville, VA

The Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program has provided me with many opportunities that never would have been possible on my own. The acute care rotations were intense, and preceptors had high expectations. While seemingly demanding at some times, this enabled me to take on more responsibilities than I may have otherwise, and allowed me to learn more and get more out of the experience. For me though, the most significant part of the program was the longitudinal portion, something that I truly never would have experienced had I not been enlisted in such a program. Our ongoing research project has enlightened me to the magnitude of such a project, and the commitment required by one to undergo such a task. Though still certainly learning, the Scholars Program has helped me begin to understand the process of implementing a research project and preparing for publications. From the weekly journal clubs, along with the course taken during P3 spring, I have become much more fluent and capable at interpreting literature and understanding statistics. These are necessary abilities that I can now take with me into my career. The professional development series has been invaluable at strengthening my leadership and interpersonal skills, and at shaping my goals and values. Our faculty mentorship in the program has been superb, and for this I am grateful. I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with multiple preceptors beyond what I would expect from regular 5-week rotations. Through this program, I feel much more prepared for the future, and much more confident in my ability to be competitive in my field. To sum it all up, never once have I regretted signing up for the Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program. And wherever I end up 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, or 10 years from now, I’ll know that the Scholars Program helped shape my journey.

The Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program was a unique and challenging experience that has helped me develop both personally and professionally. Not only has the program allowed me to expand upon my clinical skills, but has improved my communication, time-management, and collaboration abilities. This program stands out among other fourth-year rotations because of the added longitudinal research project, weekly journal clubs and journal reviews, and case conferences. While I was pushed out of my comfort zone at times throughout the program, I now feel much more prepared to undertake the challenges associated with a residency program.

I have enjoyed working with the program directors, all of the preceptors, and especially my fellow Pharmacotherapy Scholars. The preceptors were instrumental in my development and have taken these experiences to build my own style. My confidence in my abilities has increased dramatically over the past year. I am grateful for the opportunity to complete this program and feel that it has prepared me to enter the next phase of my career.

The scholars program has given me a great deal of exposure to inpatient clinical pharmacy in a number of practice areas. Each rotation gave me the opportunity to work within different multidisciplinary teams and service models within transplant, cardiology, and critical care. Small-group topic discussions with students, residents, and preceptors helped to strengthen my clinical knowledge base, while the Professional Development Series was beneficial for preparing me for residency application and a future as a pharmacist. Working on the longitudinal research project has given me a much better understanding of the research process and refined my skills in evaluating existing literature. I feel like the Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program’s rigorous rotations and longitudinal meetings have helped to prepare me for the challenges of a future residency program.

After completing the Scholars Program, I can say with full confidence that I would not be the student pharmacist or person that I am today without the skills I gained during the Scholars Program. Throughout the core rotations, I was consistently challenged and held to high performance standards. My preceptors were aware that I was a focused and motivated student, and were able to cater to my level of knowledge and experience, challenging me to get to the next level of my learning as a student pharmacist. Having completed the core rotations, I now feel comfortable entering and contributing pharmaceutical care to a multitude of clinical situations, which is a quality that I feel I would not have without the Scholars Program. In addition to my challenging rotation experience, I am grateful to have had the opportunity to focus on professional development as well as clinical research on a weekly basis. The integration of these components into the experience truly sets the Scholars Program apart, as there is more to being a health care provider than clinical skills alone.

When faced with the challenge of choosing rotations for our final year of pharmacy school, I knew that I wanted to use the rotation experience as more than just an opportunity to enhance my clinical knowledge. I applied to the Pharmacotherapy Scholars program because of the unique and personalized experience that it offers to the students involved. The aspects that appealed most to me were the opportunities for networking, participation in research projects, and professional development series that allow students to gain a better understanding of how to become a leader in the profession. I knew that being a part of the program would assist in my personal and professional growth, and would help me to determine the next steps on my career path. Throughout my rotations I feel that I have not only met the expectations of the program but have also far exceeded my own expectations, and feel confident that I will continue to build upon these experiences as a PGY1 resident.

Being in the Scholars program has first and foremost given me a sense of confidence. I feel more comfortable talking to a physician team, my knowledge of pharmacotherapeutic decision making has vastly improved, and my research skills are being developed. As I continue through this program, the higher level of learning is evident. I have been held accountable, have been shown respect as a colleague, and know that I will be able to transition into a residency more easily than I would have if I had not completed this program. I recommend this program to any student considering it in the future, especially if they have the drive to succeed and better themselves as clinicians.

Nan Wang

Placement: The University of Toledo PGY1- Toledo, OH

The Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program has been one of the most challenging, fulfilling, and meaningful experiences that I have had as a pharmacy student. Through this program, I have had the opportunity to work with great preceptors who have taught me clinical knowledge, skills in communicating and building relationships with other healthcare providers, and the level of dedication and responsibility required to take care of patients to the best of my abilities. I also enjoyed and appreciated the series of journal clubs, journal reviews, patient case conferences, and topic discussions, from which I was able to learn how to critically evaluate the literature and the importance of incorporating evidence-based medicine into everyday practice. The research component of this program also gave me the valuable experience not only to learn study design and apply statistics, but also to understand the commitment needed to conduct research to change and advance patient care.

Overall, I am grateful to be a student of the Scholars Program, and I am inspired and humbled by all of the experiences that this program has provided for me. I believe that the adaptability and perseverance that I have developed through this program will carry me through any challenges that I may encounter in the future, and I will continue to build upon the skills that my preceptors have taught me in order to become the best patient care provider that I can be.

The Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program has provided me with many valuable experiences in a wide variety of practice settings. I have had the opportunity to work with many excellent preceptors, who have helped me further develop my knowledge and patient care skills. Throughout the program, I have greatly developed my critical thinking skills and feel prepared for residency training. Most importantly, however, this program has strengthened my desire to practice as a clinical pharmacist so that I can provide excellent care to my patients.

The Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program was a unique and challenging rotation that tied together institutional, acute, and ambulatory care experiences with an additional longitudinal research component. The 20 week rotation block was designed to mimic residencies in that it placed significant emphasis on the student to be an independent and proactive thinker, to find a role as part of a primary care and consult team, as well as to learn how to adapt to various settings, both clinically and academically. The ability to complete four blocks at a single institution allowed for familiarity with the computer system, hospital schematics, and staff.

In reflecting across my experiences upon completion of the Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program, I am able to note significant progress in my ability to efficiently work-up patients, present complex journal articles, and prepare patient cases. Most importantly, I am able to approach how I think about patients and patient care at a higher complexity than before I started the program. Once I learned how to efficiently use the EMR to pull information for each patient, I was able to tie together more clinically relevant items that helped me to see the entire picture and progress as a clinician. I also noted my ability to adapt to difficult situations significantly improved throughout the rotation. I learned how to approach various dynamic environments and what learning points to take away from each.

I am extremely lucky to have been part of such an incredible experience. The Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program ultimately allowed me to prove to myself that you do not need fantastic grades and excellent test taking abilities to excel as a clinician-you need the willingness to be able to fail as you learn and grow and to be able to remain calm in an environment drenched in stress and intensity.

Completing the Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program was one of the most challenging yet rewarding experiences I had while in Pharmacy School. The long hours, high expectations from preceptors, cases conferences, special projects, and my own lofty goals for the program pushed me farther than I had ever been pushed in school or on previous rotations. However, this program taught me more than just drug information. I learned how to be part of the health care team, build trust with doctors and nurses, make recommendations with confidence but without offending practitioners, and educate the team on evidence-based drug therapy. I also learned important life lesions: how to balance work and fun, how to say ‘no’ when I have way too much on my plate, and how to say that I didn’t know the answer.

I have had the opportunity to make connections with so many hard-working and intelligent pharmacists who put so much time and effort into my education for which I am extremely grateful. Spending time with different practitioners gave me the opportunity to take pieces of their style and develop my own. Their advice on residency, interviewing, and life have prepared me for my next steps.

After completing this program, I feel prepared to take on whatever comes my way. I know that I have been handed the skills that I need to be a successful resident and a caring pharmacist. I’m ready.

I believe the Scholars program provided me with an excellent opportunity that not only developed my skills and knowledge of a pharmacist, but also allowed me to improve my communication and “non-pharmacy” skills required in a good resident. Through daily challenges of increased patient loads, longitudinal projects, and somewhat stricter evaluation criteria than most rotations, I felt inspired to push myself out of my comfort zone and to master self-management techniques that extend beyond a career.

I think this is especially evident as I begin my next rotation at another hospital. My ability to adapt and quickly learn that was developed through interacting with different faculty and services allowed me to begin working up patients and making recommendations to the medical team within the first few days. My refined technique to review medical records, charts, and progress notes to understand each patient’s complete health has enabled me to manage a larger volume patients than both myself and my preceptor anticipated I would have done in the first week. Lastly, skills reinforced during journal clubs and case conferences have easily translated to topic discussions and journal clubs that I have participated in thus far.

I am extremely grateful for being selected into the Scholars program, and I hope that my outcome in matching with a residency and my career path reflects the degree that I feel I have developed over the past 4 months. Although this program does have some areas that do require improvement, they have been discussed in detail, and I believe that this program will only move forward and continue to garner reputation. I thank all the faculty, staff, and preceptors involved in creating and executing this program, and I am positive that it will continue affect the lives and careers of dedicated students.

The Pharmacotherapy Scholars Program was a unique experience, and I was glad to be a part of it during the inaugural year. I believe the program provided exposure to more topics and areas of practice than we would have seen during a regular rotation experience. I think what makes this program stand out from just doing four rotations at Presbyterian were the research component, the professional development series, and the structures journal clubs, journal reviews, and case conferences. Although there were bumps along the road, this was to be expected of a program in its first year. I think this program will be an asset to the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy, but be cautious not to make the rest of the students feel second-rate. I have enjoyed working with all the preceptors and feel my knowledge has increased dramatically. I am grateful for the opportunity to complete this program with my fellow scholars.
